Carlos Hagedorn on “Grapetown Barrio Education & Community Transformation”

Grapetown Barrio Education and Community Transformation

How are we responding to the needs of our Chican@/Latin@ students of the Napa Valley? Are we providing authentic and culturally relevant learning experiences for them in our classroom and community? In this discussion we will explore how GrapeTown Barrio Education provides us with an educational framework that embraces the cultural wealth of our Chican@/Latin@ students, while affirming their local experiences as students in the Napa Valley. Through culturally responsive and culturally relevant pedagogies our Chicano/Latina students are best equipped to dream, succeed, thrive, and become agents of community transformation.

Carlos Hagedorn presented this talk touching on the themes above at Napa Valley College to a packed room of students, faculty members and community members on September 24th.

For the second year, Beyond the Label, brought crowds to the Black and White Center  in downtown Napa to see Chicano Art from Napa and around the bay area.   The mission of the exhibit and its resulting success were captured in this front page article –  Latino artists urge Napans to see ‘Beyond the Label’

Napa Valley Latino Heritage Committee and its fiscal agent Puertas Abiertas Community Resource Center were delighted to assist Mauricio and Sergio with fiscal agency and some support with promotion.  We look forward to partnering again next year.

The Villalobos Brothers at Lincoln Theater

Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater in Yountville is committed to promoting Latino cultural arts in our communities and the Napa Valley Latino Heritage Committee considers itself a partner in “getting the word out” about these events.

The theater brought out the Villalobos Brothers from New York via Veracruz, Mexico who played an awesome set of “contemporary, high-octane Mexican fiddling,” enchanting their audience.  When their show was over, Ernesto Villalobos continued performing out in the lobby and the band mingled with their guests.

Napatitlan, Napalerisma/o, Napalera/os, and Napatistas

Napatitlan

A new Facebook page was born July 7, 2015, Napatitlan, which explains itself through its posts, which are also shared on Instagram and Twitter, and increasingly finding their way into the local vernacular.   One writer shares:

“Napalerismo promotes the right and duty of Napaleras, Napaleros, and Napalerxs to organize and to create narratives; the right to individual and collective self-determination, self-expression, and self-affirmation. We can create the moments and spaces to define and redifine who we are, what our stories are, and who we will become. This image (below) is a moment in an art space in downtown Napa where many Napalerx artists expressed their narratives in their own terms and styles to their own people and to the community at large, organized by their own efforts. Self-determination is important in this collective, global human experience. ‪#‎Napalerismo‬‪#‎napatitlan‬ ‪#‎napavalley‬ ‪#‎ournapa‬ ‪#‎napatista‬
